XTTriathlon British Triathlon Cross Championships

The superb weather and huge support from all our sponsors set the background for the greatest XTTriathlon and British Triathlon Cross Championships 2011.

A free bike mechanic service from Cyclesurgery, try-before-you-buy from Gore Bikewear, café and free massage from Care for Health were just some of the perks for all XTTriathlon competitors on the day.

The pristine calm waters of Hawley Lake and peaceful surrounding forest of Gibraltar Barracks was abruptly disturbed as 400 athletes descended on the Royal Engineers training land just outside London. The full distance event set off at 10:00 with a 2 lap 1500m swim including the exit and re-entry. This mass start swim circumnavigated 2 islands and was convincingly led from the start by Richard Stannard who exited with almost 1 ½ minute lead at 00:17:43. First woman out of the water Jacqui Slack came into T1 at 00:20:30 with over 3 minutes lead on the next woman.

This set the tone for the rest of the race for the men’s category as Stannard convincingly completed the 2 lap 24km off road bike course. The bike route included a mix of undulating heath land and technical forest trails and lapped through the main spectators area. After 24km Stannard had begun to loose some of the advantage as other race favourites Doug Hall, Cedric Lassonde and Graham Wadsworth closed the gap.

The women’s lead narrowed as Kerry Macphee clawed back valuable seconds on the bike route leaving the fight down to the run.

The 2 lap run route saw the men’s leader being chased down as they scrambled through the forest across sand, mud, gravel and various off road obstacles but Stannard held the lead to finish 1:42:17. And Kerry Macphee clinched the women’s title by 7 seconds at 2:00:31.

This year’s XTTriathlon saw the emergence off road triathlon as the next pinnacle of triathlon racing testing stamina and agility on the uneven bike and run routes with some magnificent performances from Richard Stannard and Kerry Macphee.

Longleg Post race report

Sportive Post Race Review

15th May was a busy weekend in the south-east sportive calendar this year. With already 3 to choose from it was with a mixture of anxiety and throwing caution to the wind that led to event organizers allabouttriathlons to hold their first sportive in the Surrey Hills, their own back yard! They say fortune favours the brave….and so it did!

Karen, escaped from organising the CPTri (next sunday), and ignored the EGTri for a nice ride.

Event director Rory Macpherson said “My brother and I have grown up in these hills and have been cycling on and off them for over 30 years. I’d like to think we could offer something a little different to the usual routes that riders follow. If the feedback we’ve had so far is to be believed, mission accomplished!”

The courses on offer were the 100k medium and 65k short with the HQ being on Albury Cricket Pitch, one of the most beautiful spots in the South East.

Back at the start, as soon as riders checked in their electronic time card, the clock started ticking and the bike cogs started turning.

Thumbs up - 1 mile in, all downhill so far

Whilst not offering an epic distance, both the routes on offer proved to be rather intense. Indeed only a handful managed to get gold standard time on the 100k and no one achieving gold on the 65k.

Rolling hills in classic Surrey countryside perhaps lulled people into a false sense of security. Above average speed was being achieved by most on a still, warm day, although some of the road surfaces put paid to that as they deteriorated to an extent that allowed cyclists to sample their very own Strada Bianche – which happened on the same day in Italy…Coincidence? I think not..

Not many stopped at the first feed station as it was only 22k in. They would regret this later on. Local cake baker Debbie Nicholas supplied cakes that many will never forget. “I think we may have just raised the bar for feed stations! I knew they would be good but I’ve never seen a post cake reaction like that before” said Toby Jenkins – fellow allabouttriathlons event director.  “Mmmmmm” with a look of sheer pleasure on her face was all that one 100k sportive rider could say.

Getting comfy for the climbs ahead
In a heady atmosphere of anxiety and trepidation, the 100k headed off towards the base of Leith Hill, whilst the 65k towards Winterfold. Signs greeting cyclists at the bottom of both hills confirmed everyone’s fears. Tanhurst Lane: 18%. Bar Hatch Lane: 21%. While the 65k had to deal with Bar Hatch Lane only, the 100k would do both.  But the omnipresent motorbike safety marshals were certainly a comfort to most.

And so it was. The LongLeg Sportive has arrived. A spring classic, which will only grow in popularity due to its unique tough courses, thorough organization and great cakes!!

Bolt round the Holt

It's a bit of a linktastic blog here tonight. Three events from the weekend are now online and ready for you from the weekend. A bit of a mix with an offroad event, a woodland run and an all day Cycling Sportive.

So - links to the galleries in race order:

Bolt Race Gallery link is: http://gallery.sussexsportphotography.com/a.tlx?k=2n5zgmx

Suffice to say it's been a busy weekend, with more than 370 miles driven to get to events, and the price of diesel now well over £1.40 from the cheapest (that's £6.36 per gallon for those of you who remember £1 per gallon). I managed to eek out about 47mpg so by my maths that was over £50 spent on fuel alone. Phew !

I'm not saying I'm suffering a bit from tiredness, but on Saturday I drove past the A3 junction by mistake and used the M3 junction instead. That was plain silly, as everything said I should have gone down the A3. It only added 3 minutes to the journey, but I did feel a bit stupid.

The Bolt round the Holt as ever was well attended with about 770 individual finishers. A quick look at the indexing data that we have and we have 774 unique catalogued numbers to search by - so I'm guessing that we have everyone. The next bit of analysis on the spreadsheet can wait, but I'm quite pleased with that given how busy the race is during it's peak time. It would be quite easy to miss people in the mix.

It was however perfect conditions for running, as the lead runner pointed out with his winning gap of 2min40s in the 21km/half marathon time of 1:16:20 Not bad on dusty track surfaces.
